Latin script for Kashmiri
We decided to adopt the method that Sir George A. Grierson used in his ground breaking work about Kashmiri Language.(See this page) We have modified it a little. Grierson used diacritical marks like superscripts and subscripts for sounds that are not found in English. He for example used a decimal or period sign (.) underneath the D and T to denote hard Ds and Ts. It is not easy to make these signs with a common English keyboard so we suggest replacing the period with a second instance of the same alphabet for this purpose (DD for hard D and TT for hard T).
Grierson used C to denote the Ch sound as is common for example in italian. He used CH combination for the "chh" sound. We thought that was very appropriate and wanted to use it. However, the fact remains that most of us are used to using CH for words like "Church." Also most of Urdu and Hindi words when written in Latin alphabet use the combination of C and H for Urdu Cheem and Hindi Cha. All of us grew with this, so we think using C alone for the CH sound may cause confusion. We therefore recommned staying with Ch for words like Church and use Chh for words like Chhaan (Carpenter).
